Big-rig Tow Truck Crash in National City Causes Closure of SR-54 Connector Ramp to I-805
NATIONAL CITY, CA (January 18, 2019) – A crash involving a big-rig tow truck on Thursday afternoon in National City caused the connector ramp from state Route 54 to I-805 to be closed. The January 17 accident occurred on the ramp that transitions from state Route 54 eastbound to I-805 northbound.
The time was roughly 12:15 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Reports say the driver of the big-rig lost control, and the vehicle had jackknifed prior to crashing into the road’s guard rail. Ben Garcia, who is a captain with the National City Fire Department, said the wreck damaged the off-ramp. Debris—including pieces from the damaged truck and concrete chunks—from the crash fell onto Sweetwater Road, located below the ramp. Debris fell onto cars, reports say, which were located in the Park and Ride. Five cars, and possibly more, were damaged.
Respondents took the driver to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. Reports say the driver’s injuries were minor. The identity of the big-rig’s driver, including the person’s name, age, gender, and city of residence have not yet been reported.
According to reports, no other person was injured in the crash. It is not known what caused the crash, and why the big-rig went out of control. Investigators are examining the information.
