A 40-year-old mother and her 4-year-old son were killed Friday in a single-vehicle crash Friday. The accident happened on Interstate 80 in Sacramento.
The woman, identified as Carrie Tricia Sears, was driving a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder with her son Skylar Eubanks in a child safety seat in the back seat.
Sears’ 9-year-old daughter was also in the backseat next to Skylar. She suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The daughter, whose name has not been released, was recovering at UC Davis Medical Center
An off-duty officer alerted the California Highway Patrol around 2 p.m. that the Pathfinder was speeding while weaving in and out of all three lanes of traffic. Finally, the Pathfinder veered across all lanes, tumbling down an embankment and slamming into several trees. It was traveling from 80 mph to 100 mph CHP officer Lizz Dutton said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.
Sears died at the scene, while Skylar died a short time later. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and officers are trying to determine if drugs or alcohol may have been involved.
