Stolen Pickup Abandoned While Moving the Wrong Way on 215 Freeway in Menifee; Woman Injured
MENIFEE, CA (January 4, 2021) – A woman was injured on Thursday in Menifee when a suspected stolen pickup truck, which had been traveling the wrong way, was abandoned while moving. The truck hit her van head on where she was driving on the 215 Freeway.
The pickup truck–described as a Dodge Ram–was suspected stolen, and Hemet police had been pursuing it. Reports say the suspect driver turned the headlights off, went onto the earthen shoulder, smashed through a fence made of barbed wire, and went onto the 210 freeway driving the wrong way.
Officers terminated the pursuit. The suspect driver reduced the speed he had been traveling, and he and a passenger jumped from the moving truck. According to Mike Lassig, who is an officer with the California Highway Patrol, the suspect driver and the passenger fled on foot across the lanes of the northbound and southbound sides of the freeway and ran into a field.
The pickup truck continued to roll on the freeway and it struck a van head on. The person driving the van suffered injuries that were described as major.
Responders transported her to the hospital. Her current condition is not known. She was identified as 55 years old. Her name and city of residence have not been reported.
Authorities apprehended the passenger who had been in the pickup truck. The identity of the person has not been reported.
Investigators are continuing their search for the suspect driver, who has not been identified or described.
The pickup truck’s owner has not been identified in reports.
