He was about 2,300 feet above the Yosemite Valley floor when he dropped because his rope was cut and severed by a dislodged rock.  Mason Robison was 38-years-old and was climbing with a partner.  It was around 9:15 a.m. when the incident occurred. He was putting a piece of gear into a flake or deep crack in a large rock that he was trying to climb past, but since it ran along the slope, when it came off, it severed his line completely.

Robison fell about 230 feet, at which point the second line that he was connected to stopped his fall. However, he had been dangling and swaying on the line and it was clear that he was not moving or had any life left when rescue teams reached Robison.

They did not scale El Capitan, but flown to the top in a helicopter and rangers rappelled down to reach Robison’s body and then used their lines to climb back up with the body safely in the possession.

The El Capitan is a popular destination at Yosemite National Park in Yosemite, Calif.  Children are accompanied up the rock’s edges with experience and supervision.  It is unfortunate that this accident took place on such a common climbing area.
