Nathan Campbell, 38, brought destruction and loss to Venice Beach on Saturday when he crashed his car into the popular boardwalk, killing one and injuring 11. He has been described by the police as a transient, and was booked for investigation of murder. Campbell has been in custody since he surrendered to police the night of the incident, and his bail has been set at $1 million. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said he is expected in court on Tuesday.
Investigators are waiting for toxicology reports to determine whether or not drugs or alcohol were a factor in Campbell’s actions, but they have not yet determined motive.
Based on eyewitness accounts and surveillance footage from nearby businesses, officials have gathered that a man in a dark-colored Dodge Avenger drove between a pylon barrier and a building, and slammed right onto the popular Venice Beach boardwalk at a high speed. Frightened people scattered to avoid the vehicle. Police are currently working with local stores to obtain more footage of the event.
32-year-old Alice Gruppioni, who out from Italy on her honeymoon, was mortally injured by the crash and succumbed to her injuries later that day in a local hospital. She had been married just weeks before and her husband, Christian, was injured as well. Gruppioni’s autopsy was scheduled for sometime Monday.
Officials say that Gruppioni’s father is the former president of the Bologna soccer team and Gruppioni managed a business in her hometown. The couples’ families both came to Los Angeles, and Gruppioni’s aunt, Katia Gruppioni, released the following statement on Monday:
“When she met Christian and then got married a week ago, Alice is living a life full of love and people loving her… her father and mother (Valerio and Barbara) are heartbroken as are the two sisters Naike and Vincenzo and the two twin kids, beloved Leone and Gregorio and little Carlotta, the beloved cousins, Francesca and Philipo, the Aunt, Katia and the grandmothers… she was robbed of her life while living her dream visit to California with her husband and this was a tremendous injustice.”
Officials reported that all patients were pedestrians along the boardwalk, and five of the 11 injured have been released from area hospitals. One of the 11 was reported in critical condition and two were said to be in serious condition. The other eight were booked with minor injuries.
