Malibu, CA – Head-on Crash Kills Mike Hollinrake and Rick Artes on Pacific Coast Highway

MALIBU, CA (August 6, 2018) – Mike Hollinrake and Rick Artes died in a head-on crash on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu Friday afternoon. The accident occurred near Trancas Canyon Road at roughly 12:07 p.m.
Two other people were injured when the vehicles—a minivan and a pickup truck—collided.
Sergeant Shawn Ruda, who is with the Malibu-Lost Hills Station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, said responders pronounced two men dead at the scene of the accident.
The victims who died were Rick Artes, described as a 60-year-old resident of La Habra; and Mike Hollinrake, a 48 year old.
Responders took a person who had been a passenger in the pickup truck by airlift to a hospital in the area. That person’s condition was reported as stable.
Another victim, described as a bicyclist who had been hit by the pickup truck’s wheel, suffered injuries that were characterized as minor.
Dangelo Robinson, who is a deputy with the Sheriff’s Information Bureau, offered some idea of the scenario related to the crash. An early investigation seemed to indicate that the person who had been driving the gray Mercury minivan that was involved in the crash had been traveling west on Pacific Coast Highway at high speed. As the minivan tried to pass a vehicle, it went out of control and swerved over the divider in the center of the road. The minivan then struck a red Dodge Ram pickup head on.
No other details were yet reported, and it is not known who the driver was of each car, nor the extent of injuries of all the people who were involved in the crash.
