Los Angeles City Council Proposes Amber Alert-Like Alerts For Hit-And-RunsMitchell Englander, a Los Angeles City Councilmember, received unanimous approval to take steps to create a hit-and-run alert system. The system, dubbed “Medina Alerts” after Colorado hit-and-run victim Jose Medina, would post alerts on highway signs and alert the media after a severe and/or fatal hit-and-run accident. Colorado is the first state that recently approved the implementation of the alerts.

According to some experts, hit-and-run accidents in Los Angeles have been reaching epidemic proportions.

In 2012, the LA Weekly reported that the Los Angeles Police Department records about 20,000 hit-and-run incidents every year. The reported also noted that 4,000 of those incidents result in injury or death.

The alerts would be comparable to the AMBER Alerts already implemented. Research has shown that Amber Alerts are not as effective as originally believed, and it is not clear that the Medina Alerts would be effective either. I
