Woman and Another Person Killed, Three Injured in Crash Involving Possible Street Racing in Sun Valley
LOS ANGELES, CA (April 15, 2019) – A crash in Sun Valley Friday night that may have involved a street racing incident killed Olivia Enriquez West and another person, and injured three others. The April 12 incident occurred on San Fernando Road.
The time was roughly 7:00 p.m., Los Angeles police said.
Reports say two vehicles—described as a Dodge Charger, dark in color, and a Dodge Charger that is white—were both traveling east on San Fernando Road. Authorities believe the two vehicles may have been racing, or driving recklessly. The white Dodge Charger struck another vehicle—described as a Toyota Corolla—broadside.
Meghan Aguilar, who is a detective, said the person who was driving the Toyota had not been participating in the alleged street racing. The Toyota was making a turn to the left to Lankershim Boulevard when the crash happened.
The impact of the collision sent the Corolla down the road. The white Dodge Charger ended up in the intersection. According to Aguilar, the Toyota had significant damage.
The person who had been driving the Dodge Charger which was dark colored left the accident site and continued on San Fernando Road heading eastbound. The driver—identified as male—did not stop to help the victims, according to Tony Im who is a spokesperson with the Los Angeles Police Department.
Two people who had been traveling in the Toyota died at the accident site. The person who had been driving the Toyota was identified as Olivia Enriquez West. She was 59 years old and a resident of Sun Valley. The other victim in the Toyota had not been officially identified by authorities, but family members identified the victim traveling with Olivia as her husband, Leland West.
Respondents transported three people who had been traveling in the white Dodge Charger to a hospital. Reports say the driver—identified as a woman 25 years old and a resident of Pacoima—faces arrest on suspicion of murder. Reports say that she and another female in the vehicle suffered injuries that were severe. Another person who had been in the Dodge Charger suffered injuries that were described as minor. The occupants of the car have not been identified by name.
Investigators are examining the details regarding the incident. If anyone has information, he or she is asked to contact the Valley Traffic Bureau. The number is 818-644-8000.
