Lawsuit Filed by Parents of Sisters Struck and Killed While Walking to School in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES, CA (April 1, 2020) – Two sisters who were walking to school in Los Angeles’ Exposition area were struck and killed by a big rig last year; their parents filed a lawsuit on Monday in which wrongful death is alleged. Named as defendants in the lawsuit are the city of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Unified, Metro, and Caltrans.
Angelina Nicolas and Francisco Lorenzo are the mother and father of the two sisters who were killed, Marlene and Amy Lorenzo.
While walking to Clinton Middle School on April 4 of last year, Marlene and Amy were struck by a big rig in the vicinity of Broadway and 37th Street. Marlene died on the day of the incident. She was 14 years old.
Amy suffered injuries that were critical. Nearly three weeks after the incident, she died. Amy was 12 years old.
The lawsuit states that thousands of students walk to school in that area, and during the times when children are present, heavy traffic—especially on Broadway—is also in the area. Other accidents and near accidents have occurred in the area, according to reports.
On the day and the location where the two sisters were struck, no crossing guard was posted, reports say.
The person who had been driving the truck involved in the crash cooperated with investigators.
