Los Angeles Hit-and-run Crash in Boyle Heights Injures Elderly Man on Travel Scooter
LOS ANGELES, CA (December 7, 2020) – Late in the morning on Friday in Los Angeles, an elderly man who was riding a travel scooter was struck and injured by a hit-and-run driver. The December 4 incident occurred in the neighborhood of Boyle Heights on Mott Street.
The time was roughly 10:35 a.m., the Central Traffic Division of the Los Angeles Police Department said.
The man had been going across Mott Street within a crosswalk that is marked and a vehicle–which may be a Mazda CX-7, gray or silver in color–made a turn from Mott Street onto Whitter Boulevard and struck him. The impact of the crash ejected the man from the scooter, and he tumbled to the ground.
The driver did not stop to help the victim, but drove away while his vehicle dragged the travel scooter, which had become wedged under it. At Orne Avenue, police say, a person without knowledge of the crash walked up to the Mazda and helped to remove the scooter from beneath it.
Video from a surveillance camera recorded the incident, and was released by authorities.
Responders arrived and transported the victim to a hospital in the area. His condition was described as critical but stable.
He was identified only as 82 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.
