Driver Suspected of Crashing into Vehicle in South-Central Los Angeles Flees Police; One Person Fatally Shot by Officers
LOS ANGELES, CA (May 4, 2020) – A driver who was suspected of crashing into a vehicle fled police; one person who had been traveling in the fleeing vehicle was fatally shot by Los Angeles Police officers. The April 30 incident occurred in Historic South-Central Los Angeles.
The time was roughly 9:40 p.m., according to police.
Reports say officers had been traveling on Wall Street in the 2200 block and witnessed a vehicle travel in reverse and smash into a vehicle that was parked. Reports say officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver did not stop.
According to police, officers pursued the vehicle. The vehicle entered an alley, came to a stop, and three occupants ran from it. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers fired at the three people, and wounded one person.
Responders arrived from the Los Angeles Fire Department and pronounced one person deceased at the incident site. His identity, including name, age, and city of residence, have not been reported.
According to reports, the Los Angeles Police Department said one person had a handgun. It is not known, however, who is alleged to have had the handgun, and whether the person who was shot and killed had the weapon.
Reports also say it is not clear what prompted the shooting. According to Norma Eisenman, who is an officer with Los Angeles Police, investigators are working on understanding the incident.
Officers later found the other two people who had been occupants of the vehicle that police pursued. The identities of the two people have not been reported.
