Christina Garcia Killed by Hit-and-run Driver in Silver Lake Neighborhood of Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 17, 2019) – Christina Garcia was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles early in the morning on Wednesday. The January 16 accident occurred on Hyperion Avenue in the 1800 block.

Reports say that Garcia—a 57 year old—had been collecting recyclable items from a bin when she was hit. Police say the person driving the vehicle that hit Garcia may not have known someone was hit. According to officials, the vehicle—described as a compact sedan, silver or tan colored—has major damage.

Police said the driver may not have known someone was hit, but the driver should have remained at the accident scene because property was damaged significantly, which was apparent.

Police also said that weather was a factor in the accident. Video from a surveillance camera shows the vehicle going out of control before it crashed. The vehicle traveled around a blind curve at too great a speed, and the wet surface of the road caused it to hydroplane.

In the surveillance video, the driver can be seen exiting the vehicle, and looking at the vehicle’s damage before re-entering the vehicle and driving away, reports say.

According to police, the driver may not have known a person was struck because the victim landed in between buildings. Investigators are looking into the details and evidence to locate the driver.
