Suspect Fleeing Police Crashes into Woman’s Vehicle, Killing Her and 5 Dogs in Long Beach

LONG BEACH, CA (May 8, 2019) – A suspect who was fleeing police in a stolen van crashed into Jessica Bingaman’s vehicle, killing her and five dogs in Long Beach. The May 7 incident occurred late morning close to where Temple Avenue and East 3rd Street intersect.

The time was roughly 11:30 a.m.

According to Arantxa Chavarria, who is an officer with Long Beach Police, officers saw a van that was suspected stolen and tried to make a traffic stop close to where Alamitos Avenue and East Broadway intersect. The person driving the white van did not make the stop, and police pursued the van, which then crashed into Bingaman’s vehicle.

Respondents took Bingaman to a hospital in the area where she was later pronounced deceased. Bingaman’s family and friends identified her, and said she was a single mom, living near the accident site. She was a dog-sitter in the area.

According to Chavarria, six dogs were with Bingaman in her vehicle when the crash occurred. Four of the dogs died in the collision. Respondents took two other dogs to a veterinarian. At the vet’s, a fifth dog was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the suspected stolen vehicle was identified as Javier Oliverez, 43 years old and a resident of Los Angeles. Respondents took Oliverez to a hospital. The types of injuries he suffered, and his current condition, have not been reported.

Authorities booked Oliverez on felony DUI, vehicular manslaughter, and evading a police officer. Reports say Oliverez had an outstanding warrant and is a parolee.

Investigators are continuing their examination of the incident’s details.
