Leonard Smith Dies Weeks after Long Beach Crash
LONG BEACH, CA (November 6, 2020) – Leonard Smith was struck by a vehicle in Long Beach, and weeks afterward, he died from his injuries. Smith was a resident of Long Beach, 74 years old.
The incident that injured Smith occurred on August 23; the time was roughly 3:10 p.m.
He was struck in a parking lot located on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in the 1990 block, Long Beach Police said.
Reports say the crash was initially a hit-and-run incident, but not long after police arrived, the person who had been driving the vehicle returned to the scene.
Responders transported Smith to a hospital. According to police, at the time of the incident, the injuries he suffered did not seem they were life threatening.
Smith died in the hospital on September 6. Officials with the coroner’s office notified police a month later they determined the cause of his death was injuries related to blunt force trauma from the crash incident.
The person who had been driving the vehicle involved in the crash was identified only as a resident of Lancaster, 30 years old. His name has not been reported.
Investigators are continuing their work on the crash details. It is not yet known if a crime happened, reports say.
