Two Trucks Collide on I-5 in Lebec Causing Chemical Spill; One Seriously Injured

LEBEC, CA (April 2, 2020) – Two trucks collided on I-5 in Lebec early in the morning on Wednesday, seriously injuring one person. The April 1 incident occurred in the Grapevine area.

The time was roughly 7:30 a.m., according to Richard Anthes. Anthes is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.

Reports say a truck had been hauling a hazardous chemical load and was traveling approximately 25 miles per hour on the freeway’s northbound side. A second truck hit the first truck from behind.

The collision caused the hazardous chemical—known as ferric chloride solution—to spill. Roughly 4,000 gallons spilled, Michelle Corson said. Corson is with the Kern County Public Health Services Department.

Responders arrived and transported one victim to Kern Medical by airlift. The type of injuries the person suffered, and current condition, are not known.

The identity of the victim, including name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported. It is also not known which truck the victim had been traveling in.

A second victim suffered injuries that were described as minor. The identity of the victim has also not been reported.

Hazmat crews from Kern County Environmental Health and Kern County Fire responded to the incident site to clean the area.

Investigators are in the process of collecting details and information regarding the crash to understand what factors contributed to it.
