Los Angeles police are mourning 1 of their own, 34-year old John Gasparyan, a Valley traffic officer who was killed while off-duty in a motorcycle collision in Porter Ranch Thursday evening, Sept. 21st. According to investigators the incident occurred just before 7:00 p.m. as Gasparyan was riding his motorcycle in the 10800 block of Tampa Avenue heading southbound. As he was approaching Chatsworth Street, he collided into the back of a white Honda Accord that was attempting to make a U-turn at the intersection. The driver of the Honda Accord remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. It is unclear if the U-turn the motorist made was legal. The crash prompted a partial closure of several streets near the scene.
Gasparyan was transported by ambulance to Providence Holy Cross Hospital in grave condition. He later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by medical staff. He is survived by his wife and 6-year old daughter. Gasparyan, a Los Angeles Police Department Valley Traffic Division officer, was a 10-year veteran of the force. Gasparyan grew up in the Los Angeles area and was known for his love of motorcycles and posted many photos of himself riding on social media.
“It is an awful night,” LAPD Spokesman Josh Rubenstein said. “You’ve got officers here that are working the scene that knew this officer. Everybody hears about it and it breaks everybody’s heart, it’s the worst call that you can get working for this police department, having to come out to a scene like this. ”
Authorities are urging the public that anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact the LAPD Devonshire Station at 818-832-0633.
