CHP Officer Struck and Killed on 15 Freeway in Lake Elsinore
LAKE ELSINORE, CA (April 8, 2019) – Steven Licon, a sergeant with the California Highway Patrol, was struck and killed on the 15 Freeway in Lake Elsinore while he made a traffic stop on Saturday. The April 6 accident occurred on the southbound side of the freeway, close to Nichols Road and to the north of it.
The time was roughly 4:30 p.m.
Reports say Licon had made a traffic stop when a Toyota hit him, his motorcycle and a vehicle that Licon had pulled over on the right shoulder of the freeway.
Respondents transported Licon to Inland Valley Medical Center where he died, according to Ramon Duran, who is a spokesperson with the California Highway Patrol. Licon was 53 years old. He had been with the California Highway Patrol for 27 years.
Reports say the people who were in the vehicle that Licon had pulled over for the traffic stop—identified as a man who was the driver, a woman, and two girls—were not injured in the collision. Their identities have not been reported.
The person who had been driving the Toyota—identified as Michael Callahan, 36 years old and a resident of Winchester—is alleged to have been driving under the influence when his vehicle struck Licon. According to the California Highway Patrol, Callahan suffered injuries that were described as minor. He had been traveling alone in the Toyota at the time of the incident.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers took Callahan into custody. He could face multiple charges, including DUI and suspicion of murder, they said.
