Driver Suspected in Hit-and-run is Shot by Laguna Beach Police During Pursuit
LAGUNA BEACH, CA (March 12, 2021) – A driver who is suspected of being involved in a hit-and-run crash was pursued by Laguna Beach Police and shot during the incident. The March 11 incident occurred on Pacific Coast Highway.
At roughly 6:20 p.m., an officer witnessed a crash involving multiple vehicles on Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, close to Bay Crest Drive, Jim Cota said. Cota is a lieutenant with Laguna Beach Police.
All of the vehicles involved in the crash have not been described, nor the manner in which the crash occurred. All of the drivers involved have not been identified.
One of the vehicles left the crash site, according to Cota, and officers pursued it. The suspect drove into Newport Beach, but the suspect executed a U-turn, and returned into Laguna, Cota said.
Officers blocked the suspect driver’s path with their patrol vehicles on Pacific Coast Highway where it intersects with Cardinal Drive. According to reports, the suspect driver left the vehicle, and was shot by Laguna Beach police.
Responders transported the suspect driver to a hospital in the area. Reports say the driver’s condition is critical. The suspect driver was identified as Tobiah Paul Steinmetz, a resident of Jupiter, Florida, 36 years old.
The suspect may have been driving a Mercedes Benz sedan, which was seen in the area where the pursuit ended.
Investigators are working to collect information regarding the incident.
