Kobe Bryant and Daughter Gianna, and Seven Others Killed in Helicopter Crash
CALABASAS, CA (January 27, 2020) – Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, John Altobelli, and his daughter Alyssa and wife Keri were among those who were killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas on Sunday. The January 26 incident occurred in a remote hillside.
The time was a little after 9:40 a.m.
Reports say the occupants had been traveling in foggy weather when the helicopter, for reasons that are not known, went down and crashed. According to authorities, all aboard were killed.
Among the victims were basketball legend Kobe Bryant, who was 41 years old; his thirteen-year-old daughter Gianna; John Altobelli, 56 years old and the head baseball coach at Orange Coast College; his wife Keri Altobelli; and daughter Alyssa Altobelli.
According to reports, Katrina Foley, who is the mayor of Costa Mesa, said Christina Mauser, who was an assistant girls basketball coach at Corona Del Mar’s Harbor Day School, had also been on the flight and was killed.
Reports also say that Todd Schmidt, who was a principal at Harbor View Elementary School, said that Payton Chester, a former student, and her mother, Sarah Chester, also died in the crash.
Friends identified Ara Zobayan as the person who had been piloting the helicopter. Zobayan died in the crash, reports say.
Investigators are working to understand what factors contributed to the crash.
