Caltrans Subcontractor Killed on State Route 94 in Jamul by Suspected DUI Driver
JAMUL, CA (December 18, 2020) – A Caltrans subcontractor who was working in a construction zone in Jamul on Wednesday night was struck and killed by a driver suspected of DUI. The December 16 incident occurred on State Route 94 on the westbound side, close to Cougar Canyon Drive.
The time was roughly a little before 9:55 p.m., according to Travis Garrow. Garrow is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.
The worker had been within an area that was coned off, reports say, which was under construction. A vehicle–described as a Lincoln Town Car–drove into the area and hit the worker.
Responders transported the victim to Sharp Memorial Hospital. He was pronounced deceased in the hospital.
He was identified only as 27 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported. At the time of the incident, he had been working for a subcontractor for Caltrans.
Authorities arrested the driver involved in the incident on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and DUI. He was identified as Arnold Lee Patton, 69 years old and a resident of San Diego.
Investigators are continuing to work on the incident.
