12 Year Old Killed in Crash Involving Off-duty Deputy in South Gate
South Gate, CA (November 11, 2021) – Isaiah Suarez Rodriguez–12 years old–was killed in a South Gate crash involving an off-duty deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The November 3 crash occurred on San Juan Avenue.
The time was roughly 4:00 p.m., South Gate Police said.
Isaiah had been traveling in a vehicle with his sister, Alexa, on San Juan Avenue. At the intersection of Firestone Boulevard, reports say, a vehicle–described as a pickup truck–collided with their car.
The pickup truck hit the car broadside, on the side where Isaiah was a passenger. The car overturned in the crash.
Responders took four patients–described as one juvenile and three adults–to hospitals in the area, South Gate Police said.
Isaiah died in the hospital.
His sister–Alexa, 19 years old–was injured. The types of injuries she suffered, and her current condition, have not been reported.
The mother of the sister and brother involved in the crash was identified by family as Betsabe (Betsa) Suarez.
The identities of the two other adults patients have not been reported.
Investigators are working to understand why the crash happened. Speed may have contributed to the crash, according to the police department.
