Crash in Irvine Kills One Person and Injures Another on I-5 Connector Road
IRVINE, CA (August 20, 2018) – One person died and another person suffered critical injuries in a crash that occurred early Saturday morning on the I-5 Freeway in Irvine. According to authorities, the August 18 crash, which involved a single vehicle, occurred on the road that connects the I-5 Freeway heading northbound with the I-405 Freeway heading northbound.
The accident occurred a little after 12:45 a.m.
California Highway Patrol and the Orange County Fire Authority arrived at the accident scene and found the two injured people. Responders pronounced one person deceased at the accident scene. Responders took the other victim, who was in critical condition, to a hospital in the area.
The person who died at the accident site had been traveling as a passenger in the vehicle. He was identified by CHP as a 30-year-old man who was a resident of Anaheim. The driver was identified as Adrian Marquez, a 29 year old resident of Santa Margarita. He suffered major injuries in the crash, and was taken to Mission Hospital.
California Highway Patrol said that Marquez had been driving a Ford Explorer truck at a high speed at the time it left the roadway and smashed into a big sign pole.
The passenger who had been traveling with Marquez had not been wearing a seatbelt, and the impact threw the passenger from the truck.
According to CHP, Marquez was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI).
