SUV Containing 25 People and Tractor-Trailer Collide in Imperial County; 13 Die
IMPERIAL COUNTY, CA (March 3, 2021) – A crash in Imperial County involving an SUV and a tractor-trailer early in the morning on Tuesday killed 13 people. The March 2 incident occurred 125 miles east of San Diego, close to Holtville, and roughly 11 miles north of the border with Mexico in rural California.
The time was approximately 6:15 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
The tractor-trailer had been heading north on State Highway 115. A vehicle–described as a Ford Expedition SUV–entered the intersection from Norrish Road, and the two vehicles collided, with the big rig hitting the SUV broadside.
According to authorities, 25 people had been traveling in the SUV, which had only the front row of seats. The rest of the seats had been removed.
Responders arrived and found twelve people had died in the crash. A thirteenth person–who was transported to the hospital–died in the hospital, according to Omar Watson. Watson is a chief with the California Highway Patrol.
The ages of the occupants of the SUV were from 15 to 53 years old. Females and males had been in the SUV.
The identities of each of the deceased have not been reported. They were reported to be mostly Mexican nationals.
The driver of the SUV died in the crash. The person was identified only as a resident of Mexicali, Mexico, 28 years old.
The surviving passengers suffered injuries that were described as minor to severe. Their identities have not been reported.
The person who had been driving the tractor-trailer suffered injuries that were described as moderate. The person’s current condition is not known.
The truck driver was identified only as a resident of El Centro, 68 years old. The person’s name has not been reported.
Investigators are working to understand why the crash happened. They are also working to understand if the people who had been traveling in the SUV were migrant farmworkers, or some other situation was taking place.
