SUV Smashes into Jack in the Box in Imperial Beach; Driver Suspected of DUI

IMPERIAL BEACH, CA (December 27, 2019) – Early in the morning on Friday, a vehicle smashed into a Jack in the Box restaurant in Imperial Beach. The December 27 incident occurred on Palm Avenue close to where Ninth Street is located.

The time was roughly 12:05 a.m., according to Cliff Rinder. Rinder is a lieutenant with the San Diego County Sheriff.

Reports say a vehicle—described as a Jeep SUV—went out of the driver’s control and smashed into the building. The crashed damaged a wall, but the vehicle did not enter into the restaurant.

Responders arrived and transported the driver to the hospital. The types of injuries the driver suffered, and the current condition are not known.

The driver was identified only as a man. His name, age, and city of residence have not been reported. According to Rinder, the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

A person who had been traveling as a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash has also not been identified. It is not known if the passenger suffered injuries.

Investigators are working to collect details and information about the incident.
