Off Duty Police Officer, On His Way To Work, Involved in Motorcycle Crash in Long Beach
Just before 2:30 p.m., the off-duty motorcycle officer was driving along Bellflower Boulevard, near the Cal State University Long Beach Campus at the Atherton Street intersection.
According to the Long Beach Police spokeswoman Allison Gallagher, the motorcycle collided with a sedan, injuring the officer. The officer hit the back of a Scion, whose driver was attempting to make a U-turn in front of him.
Both the driver and the officer were traveling southbound on Bellflower when the crash occurred, Gallagher said, with the officer unable to stop before hitting the back of the Scion, Gallagher said.
The driver of the Scion, who cooperated with officers, did not show any signs of impairment, and speed nor distracted driving appeared to be factors in the crash. No arrest had been reported.. The intersection remained closed in the afternoon while authorities continued their investigation.
The officer was taken to a hospital and was reported to be in stable condition, according to Jessica Cuchilla, a spokeswoman for the HB Police Department. She also commented, officers riding police motorcycles to and from work are considered to be on duty.
Avoiding Motorcycle Accidents
If you are a motorcycle rider, here are a few tips that can help you to avoid accidents:
- Remember that you can often be hidden in car or truck driver’s blind spot. Be careful to avoid riding in this blind spot whenever possible.
- Always wear the appropriate protective gear, including a helmet. It is even better if your gear is in a bright color that can easily be seen.
- Remember to use your turn signal when taking turns or changing lanes.
- Avoid riding in and out of cars when stopped in traffic.
Every year there are around 90,000 motorcycle accidents across the United States.
Over 1.5% of them will be involved in a motorcycle accident each year based on the number of registered motorcyclists.
However, as your iAccident motorcycle crash lawyer will tell you, a large number of minor crashes will not be reported. So the actual figures are much higher. Of the number of reports, more than 5,500 will be fatal accidents and the rest will result in severe injuries.
Motorcycle accidents can be the result of improper road signage or faulty traffic signals but more commonly accidents are caused by the reckless driving of another motorist on the road.
