Los Angeles police department is urging the public’s help in finding a hit-and-run driver who killed a homeless man while he was sleeping in an alleyway that was cut off from vehicle access near the Venice boardwalk early Thursday morning, April 19th. According to Sgt. Orosco of the Los Angeles Police Department Pacific Division, dispatchers received calls at around 1:28 a.m. of a hit-and-run that occurred near the intersection of Wave Crest Avenue and Ocean Front Walk near the famous Venice Beach Boardwalk. Witnesses say they saw an SUV that was traveling the wrong-way on Speedway just before the driver veered left on Wave Crest Avenue. The SUV drove through a dead-end sign and struck the 35-year old victim who was on the ground in a sleeping bag. The SUV driver then hit 2 more traffic signs and a wall before the driver exited the vehicle and switched places with the passenger all before fleeing the scene traveling southbound on Speedway. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Los Angeles police say that the suspect vehicle was described as either a GMC Yukon or a Chevy Tahoe and that the vehicle would have sustained extensive damage to the front and back. Investigators plan to canvass the area in an effort to find any possible surveillance video from neighboring homes.
