The driver of a stolen vehicle hit and killed a 3-year-old girl and seriously injured her mother in Anaheim as they were crossing the street. The driver then fled the scene of the accident.
The incident occurred at 6 p.m. near Salk Elementary School on Gilbert Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The vehicle involved in the accident was a beige Nissan Maxima. It was traveling northbound on Gilbert and struck the girl and her mother at the crosswalk at Guinida Lane. They were heading towards a residential neighborhood from the school.
Before the officers arrived, the driver fled and headed toward Ball Road.
The vehicle was abandoned later near Lullaby Lane and Perdido Street where officers found it. It was reported missing from Stanton.
Gloria and Jesse Gonzales, residents of the neighborhood where the accident occurred, heard everything and ran outside to find the mother and child lying on the ground with debris from the stroller, toys and clothing strewn about them. Another car stopped to assist the victims.
The girl was unresponsive at the scene, according to Gloria Gonzales. She said that residents have been fighting with the city to get a flashing light installed at the crosswalk for years. There have been several accidents reported at this crosswalk.
