ATV Plunges Off Cliff Near Harmony, Killing Passenger; Driver Suspected of DUI

HARMONY, CA (December 22, 2020) – Early in the morning on Sunday near Harmony, an ATV plunged off a cliff, killing a passenger. The driver was suspected of DUI in the December 20 incident, which occurred near Alapay Way and to the west of it.

The time was a little before 4:00 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

Four people who had been camping were aboard the ATV, according to the California Highway Patrol. The ATV was traveling southbound, going away from camp.

The ATV plunged off a precipitous cliff and came down on the beach below, landing upright in the water.

Three people were able to exit the crashed vehicle, reports say. They walked back to where they rented the ATV, and told the person working there.

The person they notified, who had rented the ATV, went to the site of the crash and freed the fourth passenger from the vehicle. Responders arrived and pronounced her deceased at the crash site.

She was identified only as a resident of Paso Robles. Her name has not been reported.

Authorities arrested the driver on suspicion of DUI. The charges she faces could include gross vehicular manslaughter, reports say.

She was identified as Maria Arayza, a resident of Los Angeles, 35 years old. She suffered moderate injuries in the crash.

Two other people who had been passengers in the ATV at the time of the crash were identified as a resident of Long Beach, and a resident of Germany. Their names have not been reported. The two people suffered minor injuries, according to reports.

None of the people who had been traveling in the ATV had been wearing a helmet when the crash occurred. All had been using seatbelts, reports say.

Investigators are continuing to work on the incident.
