Driver Fleeing Deputies Crashes, Killing 2 Men, Injuring 1 in Garden Grove
GARDEN GROVE, CA (July 31, 2020) – On Thursday in Garden Grove, two men were killed and one suffered serious injuries after a driver fleeing from deputies crashed. The July 31 incident occurred where Chapman and Magnolia intersect.
The incident began in Stanton, reports say, where deputies saw a vehicle–described as a Toyota Camry–in the vicinity of Beach Boulevard and Katella Avenue that had license plates that did not match the vehicle.
According to reports, the license plates the deputies saw were registered to the same model car, but a different year, according to Nathan Wilson. Wilson is a lieutenant with the Orange County sheriff’s department.
Though they tried to pull the driver over for a traffic stop, the driver would not comply, and deputies pursued. The suspect driver drove away at a fast speed on Katella, then turned onto Magnolia Street and traveled south.
According to reports, the vehicle went out of the driver’s control in the area where Chapman and Magnolia intersect. The vehicle hit a tree and a fire hydrant.
Responders arrived and found one person, who had been traveling as a passenger in the vehicle, died at the incident site. Another patient who had been an occupant of the vehicle was transported to a hospital, where he died, according to Carrie Braun. Braun is a spokesperson for the sheriff’s department.
Responders transported a third man who had been traveling in the vehicle to the hospital. His condition was described as critical.
None of the people have been identified in reports, including names, ages, and cities of residence. It is not known who the driver had been.
Investigators are examining and collecting details and information regarding the incident.
