Car Jumps Curb Near Fontana, Injuring Three Motorcyclists
FONTANA, CA (March 12, 2019) – A car traveling on a street near Fontana on Saturday afternoon jumped a curb and struck three motorcyclists. The March 9 accident occurred on Arrow Route, in an area within San Bernardino County located east of Rancho Cucamonga and south of Fontana.
The time was roughly 4:15 p.m.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the car—described as a Toyota Camry—was heading eastbound on Arrow Route in the direction of Cottonwood Avenue. Reports say that the driver—identified as Matthew Mercier, 31 years old and resident of Rancho Cucamonga lost control of the vehicle as he passed through Cottonwood Avenue. The car then hit a curb on the corner, swerved into the lane of oncoming traffic, and hit the three motorcyclists, injuring them.
The motorcyclists were all identified as men, two of whom are 23 years old and one who is 24. All of the victims are residents of Pomona. The names of the victims have not been reported. Reports say the victims had been wearing motorcycle safety equipment, including helmets, at the time of the accident.
According to reports, one of the victims suffered major injuries. A victim—identified as 24 years old—suffered injuries that were described as moderate. The other victim who is 23 years old suffered injuries that were described as minor. Respondents transported the three victims to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center located in Colton.
Respondents transported Mercier to Montclair Hospital Medical Center located in Montclair. The injuries he suffered were described as minor. Authorities arrested Mercier on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.
Investigators are examining the details regarding the accident.
