Five Women are Dead After a Fire Destroyed Their Limousine

A limousine carrying a bride and her bridal party burst into flames across a bridge that spans the San Francisco Bay area. Five women were killed in the accident. According to the driver, a woman complained of a smoky smell before the car went ablaze. The driver states that he did not understand her concern and instead turned up the radio for the passengers. The woman proceeded to start banging on the divider and yelled, “smoke!”
The San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, which is on the south side of the bay, was the location of the accident Saturday night. It was late and the Lincoln Town Car had just begun crossing the bridge and was on its way to a hotel to celebrate the bridal shower for Neriza Fojas. Her husband was awaiting their arrival at said hotel.
The celebratory ride ended abruptly and tragically for the bride and four others. The driver and the four women in the back were able to escape in time to avoid injury.
“This is one of the most horrific things I’ve seen in 21 years with this office,” San Mateo County’s medical examiner Robert Foucrault told the Chronicle. “Looking at it, they were on top of each other and doing what they could to get out.”
The police are still investigating the incident as a traffic accident due to the fact that they are unsure where the fire started and although no collision occurred, safety is a concern. The road should be cleared and inspected for flammable materials.
