A popular July 4th fireworks display at the suburban New York estate of a well-known billionaire has been cancelled in Oyster Bay in New York state.

A Fourth of July fireworks display at the Wash...

The announcement reported Thursday by Newsday comes a year after a fatal boat accident involving spectators at the annual celebration. The accident was fatal to three children. No one else was seriously injured.

A statement from the Dolan family said there were a number of private reasons for the cancellation.

The Dolan family, led by Cablevision chairman Charles Dolan, owns several properties on Oyster Bay harbor. They are quite the ubiqitious fixture on the East Coast social scene of those in the higher echelons.

A 34-foot boat with 27 passengers capsized last summer leaving the fireworks show. Three children were killed. The fireworks themselves did not cause any damage or cause the accident. The boat accident was separate. However, the Dolan family obviously has concerns over guest safety and does not want to tempt fate by creating a situation that would be ripe for a personal injury lawsuit.

No criminal charges were filed for the boat accident.

Police said at the time the Dolans had the proper permits to operate a fireworks display.
