Firebaugh Head-on Crash on I-5 Involving Pickup Truck and Big Rig Kills 5

FIREBAUGH, CA (January 7, 2021) – On Tuesday night, a pickup truck and a big rig collided head on near Firebaugh, killing five people. The January 6 incident occurred on I-5 on the southbound side of the freeway.

The time was a little after 9:00 p.m., according to Shasta Tollefson. Tollefson is a spokesperson with the California Highway Patrol.

The pickup truck is reported to have gone into the lane of opposing traffic, from a northbound lane into a southbound lane. The pickup collided with a big rig head on.

The pickup truck erupted in flames. The occupants of the pickup truck were killed. The identities of the five people–including their names, ages, gender, and cities of residence–have not been reported.

The big rig, which had been hauling a load of cardboard, also began to burn. The fire damaged the roadway, according to reports.

The identity of the big rig driver has not been reported. Reports do not say if the person was hurt in the crash.

Investigators are in the process of gathering information about the incident. Representatives from the California Department of Transportation, in addition to first responders and investigators, arrived on site. They were working to examine the condition of the road following the crash and fire.
