Two Men Identified as Victims Killed by 13-year-old Driving in Escondido
ESCONDIDO, CA (February 16, 2021) – Mateo Salvador and Sofio Sotelo Torres were identified by police as the two men who were struck and killed in Escondido by a 13-year old driver. The February 12 crash occurred in the area of Ash Street and Mission Avenue.
The incident began close to Gamble Street and Mission Avenue at roughly 11:15 p.m. Reports say a police officer attempted to stop a vehicle–described as a Ford Explorer–for a traffic violation.
The officer did not know at that time that the person driving the vehicle was 13 years old, and that she had taken the vehicle without permission from her mother in Vista.
The teen drove away and the vehicle went out of her control as she attempted to turn to the left onto Ash Street from Mission Avenue. Video from a doorbell camera recorded the vehicle crashing into bushes.
Two men who had been sleeping in the bushes were killed. They were identified as Sofio Sotelo Torres, 51 years old; and Mateo Salvador, 33 years old.
Authorities believe the men were homeless. They have not yet located next of kin, reports say.
A passenger who had been traveling in the vehicle was also described as 13 years old.
