Driver in Stolen Car Rear-ends Semi Truck in Escondido; Two Seriously Hurt
ESCONDIDO, CA (April 23, 2021) – Early in the morning on Thursday in Escondido, a driver in a suspected stolen vehicle smashed into the rear end of a big rig, seriously injuring two. The April 22 incident occurred on I-15 close to Del Lago Boulevard.
The time was roughly 4:10 a.m., according to Juan Escobar. Escobar is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.
A vehicle–described as a Ford Fusion, which authorities said had been reported stolen–was traveling on the northbound side of the roadway. While in the right hand lane, the Ford smashed into the semi truck’s back end.
Responders arrived and found the car was lodged beneath the trailer of the semi truck. Responders worked to free the driver and a passenger who were trapped in the wreckage.
The two patients were transported to Palomar Hospital. According to Escobar, the two people suffered injuries that were described as major. Their current condition is not known.
The driver was identified only as a man, 32 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.
The passenger was identified only as a woman, 32 years old. Her name and city of residence have also not been reported.
The person who had been driving the truck was not injured in the crash, according to Escobar. The driver has not been identified.
The owner of the suspected stolen vehicle has also not been identified.
Investigators are working on information-gathering efforts necessary to understand the incident.
