Woman Struck and Killed by Amtrak Train in Encinitas
ENCINITAS, CA (May 10, 2018) – The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of a woman who was struck and killed by an Amtrak train as she was sitting on the tracks in Encinitas early Thursday morning, May 10th. The fatal incident occurred just before 12:30 a.m. when the conductor of a southbound Amtrak train, that was traveling through the 900 block of North Vulcan Avenue near Leucadia Boulevard, spotted a woman sitting on the tracks. The conductor applied the train’s emergency brakes in an attempt to halt the train which was traveling close to 80 mph when the woman was spotted. According to San Diego County sheriff’s deputy Marcus Levine explained, “The train went into emergency braking but was unable to stop in time and fatally struck the female.” Sheriff’s officials did not say if the woman had been identified, but anyone with information about the crash was urged to call the sheriff’s department’s non-emergency line at (858) 565-5200.
