Patient Jumps from Ambulance Traveling on I-5 in Encinitas; Car Hits and Kills Him

ENCINITAS, CA (February 24, 2020) –  A patient who was being transported in an ambulance jumped from the vehicle and was struck and killed by a car in Encinitas. The February 23 incident occurred on I-5.

Reports say the patient had been in the back of the ambulance and worked out of restraints holding him. He dashed by the attendant who had been riding in the back, opened the door in the rear of the vehicle, and jumped from it while it was traveling on the southbound side of the freeway.

The patient then jumped over the divider in the center of the freeway, reports say, and while he was running across the lanes of the northbound side of the road, a vehicle hit him.

The patient died at the incident site. He was identified only as 23 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported. According to the California Highway Patrol, the patient may have suffered from mental health issues at the time of the incident.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the man has not been identified in reports. Investigators are working to collect details and information regarding the accident.
