Carjacking, Hit-and-run in Encinitas Leads to Suspect’s Arrest
ENCINITAS, CA (February 12, 2020) – A man who is suspected of carjacking and hit-and-run in Encinitas was arrested in San Diego on Monday. The hit-and-run incident occurred on I-5 in the lanes that head south, close to the exit for La Costa.
Reports say California Highway Patrol received a call about the crash, and began to search for the vehicle. The vehicle was reported to have been stolen in La Habra in Orange County.
As deputies were looking for the suspect, reports say, a vehicle—described as a minivan—sped by them with its lights not illuminated. Deputies began to pursue the vehicle.
According to reports, authorities received a call from someone who said a person had entered their house while they were sleeping, and made threats. The person took their van. Authorities believed that the reported incident was related to the van they were pursuing.
Deputies and California Highway Patrol officers pursued the van on I-5 southbound, and then on I-805 southbound. The pursuit then went to I-15 northbound.
Reports say the suspect stopped abruptly in the area of City Heights, close to El Cajon Boulevard, and began to threaten authorities. A police dog was sent to the suspect, reports say, and the suspect was arrested.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s office identified the suspect as Daniel Medina.
The hit-and-run incident has not been described in reports, and it is not known if one or more vehicles were struck. The identity of any person in that incident has not been reported. It is not known if anyone was hurt.
The victims of the carjacking from their home have also not been identified. Investigators are working to collect information and evidence regarding the incident.
