Fiery Crash of Stolen Dump Truck Ends Pursuit in El Segundo
EL SEGUNDO, CA (April 9, 2021) – On Thursday morning in El Segundo, a driver in a suspected stolen dump truck crashed, bringing a fiery end to police pursuit. The April 8 crash occurred at Grand Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway.
The time was roughly after 9:00 a.m., authorities said.
Los Angeles school police officers witnessed a dump truck smash into a number of cars that were parked near Gardena Elementary School, in the area of 168th Street and Figueroa Street.
The driver would not stop, officers said, and they began to pursue the dump truck. The pursuit continued for almost 20 minutes until the dump truck smashed into trees, close to where The Habit is located at 311 N. Sepulveda Boulevard.
One person was hurt in the incident, but reports do not identify the person.
Authorities arrested the driver on suspicion of reckless driving, evading, and stealing the truck, which reports say was stolen in Carson and was a city vehicle.
The suspect was identified only as male. His name, age, and city of residence have not been reported.
The owners of the parked vehicles that were struck have not been identified.
Investigators are continuing their work on the incident.
