Tow Truck Driver is Suspected of Smashing into 15 Vehicles in El Monte
EL MONTE, CA (June 10, 2020) – On Saturday, a tow truck driver is alleged to have smashed into as many as 15 vehicles in El Monte. The June 6 incident occurred in multiple locations, first at a Valley Boulevard intersection, and then in the parking lot of a shopping center.
The time was roughly 7:00 p.m.
Reports say the tow truck driver–who is suspected of DUI– struck three vehicles first at the intersection. He then entered a parking lot of a shopping center where he struck 12 more vehicles.
According to reports, video recorded at the scene shows a rock being hurled by someone at the tow truck. A group of people try to open the truck’s door as the truck stops.
The truck, reports say, continued to move forward. It smashed into an electrical box and a fence.
Two people–identified only as men–were reported to have entered the truck and one tried to remove the keys from the vehicle. According to a witness, a crowd of people attacked the truck and attempted to prevent the driver from exiting it.
Officers responded to the scene and took the suspect driver from the vehicle. He was identified as Alex Moreno, 38 years old. Responders transported Moreno to a hospital with injuries that were described as not life threatening. He was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence.
Two other people were also taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries. The two others have not been identified.
None of the vehicles that were struck have been described. The owners of the vehicles that were struck have not been identified in reports.
Investigators are continuing to collect information and details regarding the incident.
