Man Identified as Motorcyclist Killed in El Monte Hit-and-run Crash
EL MONTE, CA (February 22, 2021) – John Spata was identified by family as the motorcyclist who was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in El Monte on Sunday night. The February 21 incident occurred where Lower Azusa Road and Peck Road intersect.
The time was roughly 7:00 p.m., according to El Monte Police.
Video from a surveillance camera captured the crash, reports say. According to Peter Rasic, who is a lieutenant with El Monte Police, a pickup truck made a turn to the left into the path of the motorcycle.
The pickup truck and the motorcycle collided. The driver did not stay at the crash site, but left the scene.
People who witnessed the incident provided help to Spata–who had been riding the motorcycle–until first responders came to the incident site.
Responders transported Spata to a hospital in the area, where he was pronounced deceased. Spata was a resident of Temple City, 56 years old.
The vehicle is thought to be a Toyota Tacoma 4-door, black in color, according to Roger Covian, who is a sergeant with El Monte Police. Investigators are searching for the vehicle involved in the crash, and the suspect driver.
If anyone has information about the incident, the person can call investigators with El Monte Police. The number is 626-580-2100.
