Vehicle Crashes into Forester Creek in El Cajon; Woman Carried Away by Water Dies
EL CAJON, CA (March 13, 2020) – On Tuesday night, a woman was killed when the vehicle she was traveling in as a passenger crashed into a drainage canal in El Cajon where Forester Creek runs, and she was swept away in the water. The March 10 incident occurred off of I-8 westbound, close to Second Street.
The time was roughly 6:20 p.m., Travis Garrow said. Garrow is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.
Reports say a vehicle—described as a Chevrolet Tahoe—went out of the driver’s control, for reasons that are not known. It crashed, traveled down the embankment, smashed through a fence of chain link, and dropped into Forester Creek. The flow of the water was significant, reports say, owing to rainfall.
A woman, who had been a passenger, and the driver were not hurt in the crash, according to reports. Their vehicle was swept downstream until it became stuck close to First Street.
Investigators believe the woman was able to exit the vehicle, but she slipped and fell. The water swept her away.
Rescuers from Lakeside Fire, Santee Fire, Heartland Fire & Resude, and San Miguel Fire worked to help the victim. They pulled her out more than several miles downstream of the crash site, in Santee near Prospect Avenue.
The woman was not conscious. Responders took her to Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa. She was pronounced deceased in the hospital.
The victim was identified only as a resident of San Diego, 68 years old.
The driver of the vehicle was identified only as a man 71 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.
Investigators are continuing their work on collecting information regarding the incident.
