Hit-and-run Driver Fatally Injures Bicyclist on Dehesa Road in El Cajon
EL CAJON, CA (January 22, 2020) – A hit-and-run driver struck and killed a bicyclist in El Cajon on Monday morning. The January 20 incident occurred on Dehesa Road near Willow Glen Drive, and to the east of it.
The time was roughly 10:43 a.m.
Reports say the bicyclist had been riding in a bike lane and, for reasons that are not known, a vehicle—described as a Mitsubishi Mirage—went into the bike lane and struck the rider. The impact of the crash threw the bicyclist onto the vehicle’s windshield. The rider then fell to the ground.
According to reports, the driver fled the incident site, to Sloane Canyon Road. Reports say the driver parked the vehicle and ran from it into vegetation to hide from authorities.
Responders took the bicyclist to San Diego’s Sharp Memorial Hospital. He died in the hospital. His identity, including name, age, and city of residence, has not been reported.
The vehicle involved in the incident was later found by officers, and the suspect driver was found with the aid of a helicopter flying over the brushy area. Authorities arrested the suspect driver and he was booked on felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter.
The driver was identified as Craig Nelson, 56 years old and a resident of Julian.
Investigators are continuing to gather details and evidence regarding the incident.
