Driver Standing Beside Disabled Vehicle on Interstate 8 in El Cajon is Struck and Killed
EL CAJON, CA (March 3, 2021) – Early in the morning on Tuesday, a driver who had exited and was standing beside her disabled vehicle was struck and killed in El Cajon. The March 2 incident occurred on I-8, close to North First Street.
The time was roughly 2:50 a.m., according to Travis Garrow. Garrow is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.
According to Garrow, the vehicle–described as a Toyota Matrix–had crashed on the eastbound side of the roadway. For reasons that are not known, the driver had hit the divider in the center of the highway, and came to a stop in the right-hand lane.
The driver of the Toyota exited the disabled car and was standing near it in the right hand lane. Not long after, a vehicle–described as an Infiniti G35–smashed into the stationary Toyota. The Toyota was sent into the woman standing beside it.
The impact knocked the woman into the left lane, and two other vehicles struck her, according to Garrow.
Responders arrived and pronounced the woman deceased at the crash site. She was identified as a resident of San Diego, 20 years old. Her name has not been reported.
Responders transported the person who had been driving the Infiniti to San Diego’s Sharp Memorial Hospital. The person suffered injuries that were described as major.
The patient was identified only as a resident of San Diego, 24 years old. His name has not been reported.
The two other vehicles involved in the crash have not been described, and the drivers have not been identified. Investigators are working on the details of the incident.
