Driver who Hit 3 Students near School is Charged with Attempted Murder in Santa Ana, CA
SANTA ANA, CA (May 26, 2022) – The driver who struck three children near an elementary school in Santa Ana on Monday has been charged with attempted murder.
The suspect–identified as Jason Carlos Guzman, a resident of Valencia, 26 years old–was charged with seven counts of assault with a deadly weapon, seven counts of premeditated attempted murder, three counts of child abuse, and three counts of hit-and-run with injury, reports say.
The suspect, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, also faces charges that include one misdemeanor count of brandishing a deadly weapon, one count of possession of a flammable liquid, and one count of hit-and-run with property damage.
Reports say the May 23 incident began when Guzman entered Taft Elementary School at roughly 8:00 a.m., and said to an employee he was going to go to the bathroom. According to authorities, the employee said to Guzman he had to leave.
After leaving the school, Guzman is alleged to have crashed the car he was driving into a barrier in the parking lot of the school.
Authorities allege he accelerated and drove onto the sidewalk where he struck children who were walking to school.
The District Attorney’s Office alleges that three of the children flew into the air after the vehicle hit them.
The children were identified only as girls, 6, 9, and 10 years old. Their current conditions are not known.
As he was leaving the crash site, Guzman struck a vehicle–described as an SUV–authorities allege. The occupants of the SUV were a woman and her daughter, 11 years old.
Reports say a witness confronted Guzman, and he is alleged to have held a knife out. Police later located Guzman; he is suspected of stabbing himself in his abdomen.
Investigators are continuing their work on the incident.
