WHITTIER, CA (November 18, 2022) – Twenty-five recruits were injured on Wednesday when a vehicle crashed into them during a training run in Whittier. Reports say authorities allege the November 16 crash was intentional, and the driver purposely hit the victims.
The crash occurred on Mills Avenue, close to the STARS Center Academy.
The time was roughly 6:30 a.m., authorities said.
Reports say authorities interviewed witnesses and reviewed video recorded by a surveillance camera. According to reports, the video captured the vehicle–described as an SUV–going into the lane of opposing traffic and into the path of law enforcement recruits who were on a training run.
Reports say roughly 75 people were jogging in a group, and the vehicle struck 25 people.
The vehicle then struck a light pole.
Responders from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol found twenty-five victims were injured, with five people suffering injuries that were described as critical.
None of the victims have been identified by name, age, gender, or city of residence.
Authorities arrested a suspect who was charged with attempted murder of a peace officer. He was identified as Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez, 22 years old.
Investigators are continuing to collect details and information to understand the incident.
