Driver Flies off 5 Fwy into Motel 6 Parking Lot in Orange The driver of an older model Lincoln sedan was hospitalized after his car flew off the Santa Ana 5 Freeway and landed in a Motel 6 parking lot in Orange Sunday evening, April 8^th. California Highway Patrol and the Orange County Fire Authority were summoned to respond to a report around 10:30 p.m. of a vehicle that had launched off the 5 Freeway and came to rest on a fence in a Motel 6 parking lot in the 2900 block of West Chapman Avenue. According to eyewitnesses, who were driving alongside or near the Lincoln driver, “I just saw a flying car,” said witness Christy Roget. Another witness Alexis Esparza said, “It landed across the fences and hit the tree. It looks like its flat.” Esparza said that he was in his vehicle just next to the Lincoln and that he saw the driver attempt to cut from the left-most lane to the far-right lane and that’s when the Lincoln flew off the freeway down an embankment and into that parking lot. Fire crews were on scene and used the Jaws of Life to extricate the man who was still conscious after the crash. The man was transporte3d by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he was treated for minor injuries sustained in the crash. He is expected to survive. CHP investigators are trying to confirm whether the driver was racing another vehicle before the collision. Many witnesses said that the Lincoln was traveling at an excessive rate of speed on the transition from the Orange 57 Freeway to the Santa Ana 5 Freeway when the driver lost control. California Highway Patrol says that the investigation is still ongoing and they have not ruled out the possibility that alcohol or drugs played a factor in this collision.
