Several Injured When Driver Fleeing Pursuit, Collides with Multiple Vehicles in Encinitas, CA
ENCINITAS, CA (April 25, 2022) – On Sunday morning on Encinitas, a driver who was fleeing officers’ pursuit collided with multiple vehicles, injuring several people. The April 24 crash occurred in the area where Encinitas Boulevard and Via Cantebria intersect.
At roughly 8:22 a.m., authorities said, California Highway Patrol officers responded to a call that a vehicle–described as a Nissan Sentra–was moving in an erratic manner and at a fast speed on I-5 close to Manchester Avenue.
The suspect driver did not comply when officers attempted a traffic stop, reports say. The suspect driver fled, and officers pursued the Nissan.
At Encinitas Boulevard, the suspect driver left the freeway. In the area where Via Cantebria intersects, reports say, the suspect tried to go through a light that was red.
The Nissan crashed into two vehicles, described as a Volkswagen Jetta and a Chevrolet Traverse.
Responders transported three patients from the Chevrolet Traverse to the hospital. They were identified only as a woman, 32 years old, and two toddlers, whose ages and genders have not been reported.
Reports do not state the woman’s name.
Responders also transported the driver of the Volkswagen to the hospital. She was identified only as 25 years old. Her name and city of residence have not been reported.
The driver of the Nissan Sentra was also taken to the hospital, along with passengers who had been traveling with the person. The exact number of passengers is not known.
None of the types of injuries suffered have been reported. Reports only say the injuries were not life threatening.
Authorities arrested the suspect driver on suspicion of evading police, reckless driving, and other charges. The person was identified only as 19 years old.
The name, gender, and city of residence of the suspect driver has not been reported.
Investigators are continuing to work the incident. If anyone has information about the crash, the person can call the California Highway Patrol.
