Driver Fleeing Rialto Police Pursuit, Crashes into Four Vehicles and is Killed
RIALTO, CA (February 14, 2022) – Early in the afternoon on Thursday in Rialto, a driver who was fleeing police pursuit crashed into four vehicles and was killed. The February 10 crash occurred where Cactus Avenue and Rialto Avenue intersect.
The time was a little after 12:25 p.m., Rialto Police said.
Officers began pursuing a vehicle–described as an Infiniti Q50–for going at a fast speed, reports say. At first, the driver pulled over for the traffic stop, but according to officers, the person drove off when the officers approached.
Police began pursuing the Infiniti in the area of Spruce Avenue and Merrill Avenue. The driver is alleged to have attempted to strike a motorcycle officer with his vehicle, reports say.
When the Infiniti came to where Cactus Avenue and Rialto Avenue intersect, reports say, the driver went through a light that was red. The Infiniti collided into four other vehicles, none of which have been described.
Responders found the driver who was fleeing officers died in the crash. He was identified as David Smith, a resident of San Bernardino, 26 years old.
One person in one of the vehicles that was struck was injured in the crash. The types of injuries the person suffered are not known. The person has not been identified.
None of the other people involved in the crash have been identified.
The investigation is continuing into the incident.
