Driver Fleeing Police Pursuit Crashes into Apartment Building on Wiley Burke Avenue in Downey
DOWNEY, CA (December 31, 2019) – A driver fleeing police pursuit crashed early in the morning in Downey, smashing into an apartment building. The December 30 incident occurred on Wiley Burke Avenue close to where Florence Avenue is located.
The time was roughly 12:00 a.m., according to Bell Gardens Police.
Reports say the incident began when officers with Bell Gardens Police Department attempted to pull the driver over for a traffic stop. The driver is alleged to have failed to stop, and officers began pursuit.
The pursuit went into Downey from Bell Gardens, and ended when the suspect driver smashed into an apartment building. According to a witness, the vehicle—described as a Chevrolet Avalanche—overturned, and ended up against the wall of an apartment.
Officers arrested the person who was driving the vehicle on suspicion of DUI. The driver was identified only as a man. His name, age, and city of residence have not been reported.
A passenger who had been in the vehicle was identified only as a woman. Her name, age, and city of residence have not been reported.
A resident who had been inside the apartment when it was struck has also not been identified. Reports do not say if anyone was hurt in the crash.
The owner of the building has also not been identified.
Investigators are working to collect details and evidence in order to understand the crash’s circumstances.
